I’m thrilled to share a first preview of La Quem I’m thrilled to share a first preview of La Quema (del Planeta “B”)/The Burning (of Planet “B”)—a project I’ve been working on for the past two years—which will have its world premiere at the 54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam @iffr as part of the Art Directions: Installations programme. The work will be displayed at @katoenhuis during the festival.

La Quema reflects on the 1624 burning and sacking of Guayaquil by the Nassau Fleet through the lens of Ecuador’s current vernacular practices, namely año viejo—a popular custom wherein paper dolls are collectively burned during New Year’s celebrations. This mestizo ritual challenges linearity, proposing the Andean zig-zag perspective of renewal through repetition. The creation of these objects embodies Guayaquil’s vibrant popular culture and capitalist-driven desires while, paradoxically, creating a space for (political) protest. In a context where sustaining artistic practices is precarious, the practice of this cultural custom has given rise to informal economies.

Artists Joshua Jurado and Diego Cuesta—both based in the south of Guayaquil—were invited to construct a galleon-shaped año viejo inspired by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) vessel Amsterdam. Paraded through the city before being incinerated, it marked 400 years since the original event, making this action a symbol of resilience within colonial fantasies like the elusive ‘Planet B.’

Shot during one of Guayaquil’s recent peaks in violence related to extractivist legacies, this project reflects on two perspectives, from two distinct moments, under one hegemonic system. La Quema (del Planeta “B”) stands as a firm question to that same system that has shaped our bodies, ethics, and thoughts in service of capital.
